Does this mean there will be more info/direction added to the bug? As it is, I'm not entirely clear on what's needed.
I think I'm going to let Troy handle this. Maybe we should have a meeting with him once all the pieces are in place.

Hi Matej! Yes, there will be more direction once Laura is done with messaging. I am assuming that it will mostly be a matter of editing, tightening etc.
Laura, could you confirm this will be the case?

Hey Lizz - quick questions:
1) Will the PR post be in EN only? Or also in PT and ES?
2) Newsletter copy for this article is currently underway (draft in hand today, to be finalized by EOW - Troy's writing it). The outline covers all of the talking points above, so I think that part's good. We do currently also have a CTA to link to the privacy policy as part of exploring Mozilla's privacy principles (in EN only since the Privacy Policy is currently EN only) - which link should we use?
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/legal/privacy/firefox.html
vs.

Lizz, could you also elaborate on deliverables? For example, I'm sure we're going to need some sort of visual to be used in social posts, emails, snippets, etc but I don't see any details around that. My guess is that we'll need to get started on it soon, but having that info would really help.

Hey John -
I believe all the content for user engagement channels is in this doc. Also, bugs should have been filed. But they're likely in our standard monthly content requests for newsletter and social.

Hi Jess - You can link to our overall privacy page that shows the principles at: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/. The links to the Firefox policy and the websites policy (and others) are on the right side of the page.

We are also hoping to have the Manifesto text updated by 1/28, so that principle #4 will specifically reference privacy as "Individuals’ security and privacy on the Internet is fundamental and must not be treated as optional." That's Bug 876814 - Manifesto Pages Update. The plan is to go live with as many locales as we have translated by that date - so far we're at 24 locales complete.

Question to Lizz or Stacy - please answer ASAP:
For the email newsletter CTA - is it important to send our readers to:
a) The PR blog post (is there a draft somewhere that we can use to write the non-EN story?)
b) The Privacy page (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/) for en-Only (l10n versions of the newsletter will highlight the info on this page in the story itself)
c) both

> a) The PR blog post (is there a draft somewhere that we can use to write the
> non-EN story?)
Jumping in on the PR blog post status: we don't have a draft yet because the theme of it will be largely dependent on whether we're named "Most Trusted for Privacy" by the Ponemon Institute again. Alex and I are trying to get that info from the Ponemon Institute now, and will hopefully know within the next few days, but then will need to work with Harvey on the draft so I don't expect we'll have a version you can confidently use for non-EN versions until after our work week.

Didn't mean to post this last comment yet! What I meant to say was:
On the Privacy Principles page, there's A LOT of text and info, and there's no link to Lightbeam or Webmaker, nor to Harvey's upcoming blog post.
The landing page will serve many purposes: there will be one unified message (Mozilla Stands for Privacy), one unified CTA, a main KPI of Mozilla's overall Privacy Day engagement, a page to use for subsequent Privacy Days/other Privacy-related campaigns (ie. Ponemon 2014 announcement) AND a template for similar landing pages to use during other campaigns.

Hi guys, I am in the works on laying out Troy's copy into a landing page (As John suggested, I can work with it and changes can be made if privacy and PR require any.) One thing I want to confirm is, there was mention that this should follow the sandstone look and feel. ie. it should appear as though it is a standard Mozilla.org page? Or is there room to treat this as a more one-off promo piece to give greater impact?

hey Lizz, I did a bit of re-write on the copy and CTA. It keeps the same spirit, but the copy now works a little harder to back up the "see how we put your privacy first" claim in the headline. And then I just made the CTA shorter to follow the existing format on the site.

Awesome, thanks Matt. My feeling is that these all have potential but none are quite there yet.
Option 1 - probably the safest choice, but feels a little boring. If we went with it, I'd want to do something to distinguish the hero area (main text + graphic) from the six smaller paragraphs below. Seems like that could be done pretty easily by putting that top part on a separate color background or something so it would stand out.
Option 2 - this would be cool if we had some parallaxy stuff happening, where certain content emerges as you scroll, but something about it feels a little awkward to me.
Option 3 - this one is actually my favorite...feels like a nice mix of sticking with the Sandstone style but also breaking up the grid a little bit. It's really b&w though. I get that this is intended as a fairly stark page, but can you infuse it with more color?
Two more thoughts:
1. Matt, for the main graphic did you consider using any of the styles you had originated for relevant Facebook posts? In the back of my mind I'm thinking of one of those "said no one ever" ones where there was a guy snooping around with a trenchcoat & fedora. Not sure if that would work exactly, but it might add a little more flavor if you have something like that already developed.
2. Lizz, what's the CTA for this page? Feels like it's missing a button or something to represent the primary action we want people to take. Right know I don't know where people are supposed to click, and I assume we want them to click on *something*.

There's a link in each of the 6 areas and those are what we want people to click on. There's not just one overall CTA on this page - it's purpose is to aggregate the 6 focus areas/CTAs into one page :)

Thanks for the feedback. I personally like the idea of the parallax effect...perhaps there is a subtle animation, like a browser window opening on the computer screen just when the below fold area scrolls up to cover it. I was trying to play off more of the positive nature of the headline, as opposed to going with what I feel is a bit more negative with the use of a character appearing to spy. Would that be odd to have a character appearing to snoop with the 'We put your privacy first' headline? Maybe the graphic is about exposing the snoop by using the magnifying glass on the snoop himself?
I am thinking we could have this little character http://cl.ly/image/3n3w1h3D073W possibly in the corner of a browser window with the magnifying glass over him?

Hi all,
I've forwarded Lizz's note to Alex and Mika. My thoughts so far:
I like John's point about the CTA. I know we'd talked about using this page for the CTA for future campaigns as well. I noticed the CTA on the Mozilla.org banner is "Discover all the ways Mozilla works to protect your privacy." I think the CTA for this page is more like "Take action to protect your privacy." That action can either be learn more (read the principles, read blogs) or do something (install add-ons/DNT). The PR Blog Post seems the least action oriented and would change over time. I wonder if we should link to the Privacy Blog and have that link out to related content?
I also agree with John's thoughts about making the page more colorful.

Thanks Lizz, I've updated in this version. Attached is a v4, which adds some colour in the background to move away from too much of the black and white. The graphic is a combination of a privacy based FB post from a few months ago along with the setting of a browser window and magnifying glass revealing the snooper.
Comment 49•11 years ago
|
||
Awesome, thanks Matt. I like the changes you made (and yes, *that* was the character I had in mind in my earlier comment...not sure where the fedora came from).
Just to ask, do we think it's clear that the graphic is indicating that we expose privacy snoopers rather than that there are privacy snoopers lurking inside Firefox? Want to make sure we don't accidentally send the wrong signal here.
And, adding to what Stacy wrote in comment #46 I do think having a primary CTA is important. Not sure if we have time to work it out for this iteration, though.

Hey John
I can work on a CTA. I like the one that was suggested (Take action to protect your privacy.) but I can try a few other things as well.
And one other thing: are there going to be opportunities on the page to share it? And if so, do you want me to put together a couple of options for some share text?

I like version 5 the best...because I love it when things are centered and symmetrical :)
Just one lady's opinion, though!
Comment 53•11 years ago

Here's my take:
- Stacy, can you recommend one of the six topics that we could call out as the CTA here? I don't think it's a problem to repeat one of the existing ones, but we (marketing) are of the opinion that it would really help focus the page. (Presumably, we could rotate this any time we have privacy news or a related campaign, so this doesn't have to be a permanent selection.)
- I just spoke with Matt and he's going to proceed creating the privacy graphics for other channels based on what we have here.
- Troy, can you come up with a different headline besides "PR blog post" for that blurb? That one seems a bit too on the nose. (Even something like "Privacy team blog" would be fine.)
- I still prefer v4, but I know some prefer v5. Let's see how things work out with the CTA and then regroup on that.
Thanks all!

Hi all - I agree with John's concern that the graphic could be misinterpreted - although I love how cute it is!
Suggestion for the "PR Blog Post" blurb is "Advocacy". Also suggest "Values" as the title for "Privacy Principles."
In terms of a primary CTA - maybe just adding a last sentence to general copy that says something like "We encourage you to learn more and take action." But I like the idea of using one of the six topics.
However - here's an interesting thought -- Could we make "Download Firefox" the CTA? I ask that because of this feedback I gathered from Alex and Mika:
Should we consider replacing the "PR Blog Post" box with a "Firefox" box, so that we have a way of tracking how many people downloaded Firefox on Privacy Day as a result of these efforts? Should we focus on content that results in taking measurable action?
Copy could be something like "We built Firefox, the browser that...." CTA = "Download Firefox".
(Maybe there's a "Share Firefox" alternative for visitors who already have it.)
Do we have a way of tracking metrics?

Also, I like the idea of being able to share the page - using the secure social sharing code at https://github.com/mozilla/SocialShare
Comment 56•11 years ago
|
||
Stacy, how sure are you about that graphic being misinterpreted? I thought about it some more and ended up feeling really good about it.
Personally, adding a download button here as the primary CTA feels like a strategy shift to me. Wouldn't be opposed to having it on there somewhere, but it doesn't seem like the right CTA to me.
Will let Double Z Noonan or Kristin comment on the other questions.

Hi John - not sure at all, and I do think it's very cute, so I'll leave that call up to you guys.
I do like the idea of a rotating CTA depending on what's happening. I think that can really keep the page fresh. I'm not sure which of the six I would pick. Let me give that some quick thought.

I personally feel that "We encourage you to learn more and take action below." should be the CTA so that it's not taking away from the 6 focus areas below, but if we want only one of the six, LMK which one ASAP, please.
We're already past the deadline to get it over to dev. It absolutely needs to be over to them by EOD today or we're risking not giving them enough time to implement. Design MUST be final and copy should also be final, although there's a little bit of flex room for copy updates.
I agree with John that adding the download button feels too much like a strategy shift.
+1 to changing the headings from PR Blog Post (was intended as a placeholder) > Advocacy and Privacy Principles > Values
Currently planned metrics using Google Analytics tracking:
Main:
Page visits to the Data Privacy Day landing page
Secondary:

I'm meeting with Kristin in 20 mins and I will find out if she likes version 4 or 5 the best.
Stacy, which do you like the best?
John - once we reach consensus on which version (4 or 5) the group likes the best, can we call the design final and send it over to dev? Or will there need to be more design changes?

I don't think we'll need any design changes other than whatever we need for the final content tweaks being discussed here.

Hi,
I just talked to Mike Manning and we agreed that we can remove the box for the blog post on the page. Lets replace it with Download Firefox. Harvey's blog will link to this page, that makes more sense for flow anyway.
I do feel that we need a strong CTA in the blue header box. I recommend the CTA be "Learn More" and have it go to the page with the 6 privacy principles. Its ok to have this be repeated in the box below.
Thanks.

I like Kristin's suggestion of a strong CTA in the blue header box and I like "Learn More." I also like the idea of changing that on a rotating basis, when something new comes along that we want to highlight.
Agree with replacing blog post with Firefox blurb. Wondering if we should change the order of the boxes, so that Firefox comes before Lightbeam and the other add-ons?

Hey all
I updated the google doc with a blurb for Firefox. It's also right here if you want to save yourself the trip:
HEAD:
Firefox
COPY:
Our award-winning Web browser is packed with advanced security features designed to help you stay safe, and in control, online.
CTA:
Download Firefox today
I had some other thoughts for the headline, but going with a straight "Firefox" seemed to be most in line with the rest of the current headings.
Let me know what you think.

Thanks all! After reading all the comments, and speaking with Kristin, here's what I recommend (Matt & Troy, this part is for you):
- let's go with Matt's v4 for the layout
- let's add the CTA to the header area. I don't think "learn more" is quite right b/c we've already sent you do this page to learn more. Troy, could you wordsmith something around "Read our privacy principles"?
- let's add the Firefox blurb and remove the blog link as already noted.
If we need to make further changes, such as rearranging the blurbs, we can do that once it's in the dev phase. For now we need to get the basic parts in place so Matt can hand the file over to get the page built.

Sounds good to me! So, version 5 it is!
Outstanding question on the main CTA: Do we want it to JUST say, "Learn More" or something like, "We encourage you to learn more and take action below."?
Besides that, I think we have all the copy final (for now, at least) and ready for Matt to put together the final page. Then, I'll send it over to Dev.

Main CTA would what I was saying about the privacy policy. Agreed that Learn More isn't enough.

So to clarify, the choices for the blue box would be along these lines (Download Firefox is not one of the options, right?):
We'd pick one of these:
1) Read our Privacy Principles
2) Enable DNT
3) Download Lighbeam
4) Download a privacy add-on
5) Teach online privacy

Thought we agreed to make it Read Our Privacy Principles?

I don't have a strong preference, so I think that could be fine. My only concern is that Alex was really hoping to be able to measure an impact from Privacy Day efforts (i.e. x # of users downloaded Firefox, or set their DNT practices, or installed Lightbeam). If we used one of those others, would there be a way to measure that impact? Or would we just know how many clicked on the link?

We can measure the impact for each action because each of the links on the landing page is trackable.

Hi Troy - Can you let me know when you've updated the CTA? Otherwise, copy is final. Thanks!
Matt - can you post the final design file in Bug 950403 so that Dev can get started on the build? Thanks!

Hey everyone
Here are two options for the CTA, based on John's direction. This copy can be found in the google doc / copy deck as well.
OPTION 1:
Explore our Privacy Principles
OPTION 2:
Explore our Privacy Principles and read more below
Let me know if anyone had a different approach in mind.
Thanks,
Troy

Thanks Matt. Only one note - would it look awkward to have each row of boxes more aligned? The way they're currently staggered doesn't look as clean to me.
Otherwise, looks great.

Thanks guys....John, here is an example of how things look more aligned....the only issue with this is the 'Privacy principles' has noticeably shorter copy than the others, so it leaves a gap. http://cl.ly/image/2x0G1d0P0r1P

FWIW, I like it the staggered way better than this, just because the gap looks awkward.

Stacy - can you let me know if/when legal has approved the final copy?
John - Which way do you like better?
Matt - whatever way John likes it better (staggered or even w/ gap) will be final. If you could post the PSD tonight, I'll send it over to Web Prod in their bug this evening so they can get started first thing tomorrow morning.

Hey Lizz, here is a link to the 2x hero graphic. I've put it in a separate PSD since it is twice as large for retina displays than the actual one in the page mockup. Can you please pass along to the dev when you pass along the final page PSD? (Final page PSD ready to go, depending on if we go staggered or aligned).

Hey team! It's almost Privacy Day.
Please let us know the (live) URL for Privacy Day by 12pm PDT on Monday so that we can update our channels with the right link before deploying.
EN Snippet to deploy Monday afternoon (it takes 24 hours to fully deploy).
EN newsletter to be scheduled by Monday EOD (and we need to test the links and social sharing components before scheduling the send.)
In the meantime, the EN newsletter subject line tests are going out tomorrow and will link to: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/security/

Sorry in advance if I just overlooked it, but do we know when the Privacy Day page (http://cl.ly/image/2x0G1d0P0r1P/o) is going live? I'm hoping it can be published by Monday evening PDT so I can link to it in Alex's post on the main Moz blog, tentatively scheduled to publish at midnight PDT / 9 am CET Tuesday.

We actually need the page to go live Monday mid-day PDT if possible for our other channels (snippet, social, & email).
